ABSS – CH6

Chapter 6

Tang Xu’en waited anxiously for Ji Wei’s response so that he could confirm whether it was all just his imagination.

Ji Wei’s voice was a little cold, “Is that so?”

Tang Xu’en asked with uncertainty, “D-did I do something?”

Ji Wei seemed to be holding back his anger. He said in a low voice, “….No.”

Tang Xu’en, “Thank you for wiping me down and changing my clothes.”

After a while, Ji Wei said in an overly courteous tone, “It’s not a problem, we’re good friends after all. These are things I should naturally do for you as your close friend.”

Even someone as slow as Tang Xu’en noticed the strangeness in Ji Wei’s tone. He couldn’t help but feel uneasy.

Is Ji Wei angry?

They had known each other for more than ten years. He rarely saw Ji Wei get angry at him.

It happened one time when he was a student. Someone had made fun of his father’s illness and said that he smelt like the hospital, urging him to wash up properly, but he held it in and didn’t dare say anything back. Ji Wei at the time charged over and punched that person.

That was the angriest he had seen Ji Wei.

Ji Wei asked again, “Has your store closed? Save me a bowl for a late night snack. I’ll head over later.”

Tang Xu’en hurriedly agreed, “Sure, okay.”

Tang Xu’en glanced at the time. It was already eight thirty. His store closes at nine. He didn’t know if there would be any left.

At this moment, all his bad luck seemed to have come.

When Tang Xu’en went over to see if there was anything left, let alone leftovers, Tang Zheng was already toiling away with washing the pots used to store the sweet soup. He even asked him, “Big brother, you’re up? Don’t you think I’m still pretty good at this?”

Tang Xu’en asked anxiously, “Why are you packing up already?”

Tang Zheng, “Business was good today. Everything sold out early.”

Tang Xu’en was like an ant on a burning plate. He circled around the store, “Ji Wei asked me to leave a bowl for him, why is it all sold out….Forget it, I’ll just make a separate bowl for him.”

Tang Xu’en put on his apron and sleeve protector and hurriedly got ready to make something for Ji Wei.

Sweet soup couldn’t be made in a rush. A lot of the ingredients had to be soaked so it needed to be prepared a day in advance. He looked at the remaining ingredients and decided to make Ji Wei a steamed milk egg pudding.

There was still some buffalo milk left. Add to it egg white and sugar, beat well and strain it into a small porcelain cup and then steam for ten minutes.

After steaming, add two spoons of the honey red beans he had made himself.

But this alone seemed too boring.

Tang Xu’en thought for a while and, at the same time, he made a serving of soybean rice cake. Firstly mix the glutinous rice flour and sticky rice flour to a ten to one ratio and add to that sugar and milk. After mixing it until it becomes a thick paste, seal it in plastic wrap and steam for thirty minutes.

Once it has been set to cool for a while, break them into small pieces and coat each of the rice cakes with soybean flour.

Of course, the soybean flour was also something he also made himself.

At that time, there was a certificate that he hadn’t been able to successfully obtain. Tang Xu’en anxiously ran back and forth many times and could only head back home, downtrodden.

He held a folder of documents in his hands, the rims of his eyes red. He felt so upset, he wanted to cry. With only two younger brothers at home, he deeply realised that he himself was an orphan with no one to rely on.

He didn’t expect to run into Ji Wei on his way back.

Tang Xu’en was startled. He hurriedly hid the folder behind his back. Ji Wei strode angrily over to him and ordered with a dark expression, “Take it out and show me.”

Tang Xu’en, “……”

Ji Wei, “Don’t make me repeat it a second time. Take it out.”

Tang Xu’en had no choice but to obediently hand over the documents.

Ji Wei didn’t ask him why he lied to him and he also didn’t express disdain in his decision not to further his studies. He just looked through the documents and asked him what was going on. After hearing his response, he said, “I’ll go with you and ask what materials you’re still missing for this certificate to be approved.”

Tang Xu’en nodded with tears in his eyes. He thought to himself: Ji Wei really is a great person.

Not long afterwards, with Ji Wei’s help, all the necessary procedures were done and the store could finally officially operate.

During the summer vacation after graduating from high school, Ji Wei was in the store almost every day. Junior high schools and elementary schools still hadn’t started their vacation yet so his younger brothers weren’t around during the day and they also had to do their homework at night so only Ji Wei was with him, accompanying him as he tirelessly adjusted the recipe for various desserts and snacks and worked out some small promotions that could be implemented.

After managing to endure through the bleak first half of the year, business finally picked up.

At the beginning of this year, Ji Wei had even given him a suggestion. He asked him whether he wanted to expand and open a second branch.

Ji Wei had the funds and Tang Xu’en had the recipes, it was a very good offer. Tang Xu’en however thought about it for several days and declined. He held no ambitions and wasn’t obsessed with money. He felt that being able to make enough money was enough for him.

When the desserts were almost done, Ji Wei also arrived.

Tang Xu’en wiped his hands on his apron with embarrassment and said, “Everything sold out so I’ve made two desserts for you instead.”

Ji Wei wasn’t as kind and gentle as usual. His expression was a little cold.

Just like how Tang Xu’en was familiar with his place, he was also familiar with their store. Like it was his own place, he went and got out an extra bowl and pair of chopsticks and said, “Sit down. Let’s eat together.”

Tang Xu’en felt as if he had done something wrong. He let out an ‘oh’ and obediently sat down.

Ji Wei scooped out half of the steamed milk egg pudding into a small bowl. He ate from that bowl and left the original bowl for Tang Xu’en.

Tang Xu’en tasted it himself. Oh no, he had too much on his mind today and put too much sugar in. It was too sweet.

He then looked over at Ji Wei. Ji Wei was eating it without a problem, he wasn’t even furrowing his brows.

The sight of Ji Wei reminded Tang Xu’en of that strange ‘dream’. He suddenly felt uncomfortable all over.

He thought to himself: If he acted too awkward, it would make it seem as if he had a guilty conscience. He had to stay calm.

And so, Tang Xu’en smiled and started to talk to him about family matters, “After sleeping at your place for most of the day today, I thought the store must not have opened for operation but unexpectedly, Tang Zheng and Tang Yuan helped out.”

“When I got home, they even made sure they were credited.”

“Looks like I haven’t raised these two boys in vain. They now know how to treat me well.”

As he spoke and spoke, he unknowingly went a little off topic.

“……..”

“Last time, someone asked me if Tang Zheng had a girlfriend. They wanted to introduce someone to him.”

“I always thought he was still young. Thinking about it now, he has already reached a marriageable age. He’s not young anymore.”

He had always liked to chat with Ji Wei. He could talk about anything and Ji Wei would patiently listen to whatever he said, the atmosphere harmonious.

But it didn’t seem to work today.

The small porcelain spoon in Ji Wei’s hand knocked against the bowl.

Clang, clang.

He asked, “What about you? You’re also not young anymore. Do you want to be set up?”

Tang Xu’en answered foolishly, “Someone introduced me to someone a few years ago but I felt that my conditions weren’t good and I also wasn’t ready for marriage. These past few years, perhaps because I’m getting old and perhaps because I am not highly educated, no one showed interest in me and no one has tried to introduce anyone to me.”

Ji Wei seemed to have said this through gritted teeth, “You’re that anxious?”

Tang Xu’en, “….I’m not really that anxious.’

“I just think I should see where life takes me.”

Ji Wei lowered his head and silently ate.

Seeing that his mood didn’t seem quite right, Tang Xu’en didn’t dare say anything else. Ji Wei had always been very kind and considerate towards him. Suddenly seeing him so fierce, as if he had accidentally leaked out a trace of his dark energy, it was quite scary. He was so nervous, his heart was pounding.

Was it all just a dream last night? Or did something indescribable really happen?

Tang Xu’en wondered.

It was hard to tell with Ji Wei’s current attitude.

How could someone as refined and promising as Ji Wei do something like t-that? And even persistently asking if he liked it as he held him in his arms…..

Suddenly, Ji Wei spoke up, “Don’t look down on yourself.”

“You are a really good person, Tang Xu’en.”

When Ji Wei called him by his full name, Tang Xu’en’s heart immediately skipped a beat. Under normal circumstances, Ji Wei would call him ‘Xiao Xu’. For him to call him by his first name, it normally didn’t mean anything good.

Ji Wei said quite seriously, “You have this house, you’re a local and you have some savings under your name. You also have that undergraduate degree you got through self-study, you can’t say that you’re not highly educated. Your conditions are not bad.”

“You also have a very commendable character and you’re hardworking and honest. How could others not show interest in you? Anyone with discerning eyes would like you.”

Hearing this made Tang Xu’en blush.

Especially because when Ji Wei said this, he even raised his head and looked directly at his eyes. He placed extra emphasis on the word ‘honest’ when he said it but Tang Xu’en was already dizzy from the earlier praises and didn’t notice it at all.

Tang Xu’en said, “Only you would praise me like this, hehe.”

Ji Wei continued to stare at him as he chuckled foolishly.

Tang Xu’en grabbed his apron and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Ji Wei, “Do you really not remember what happened last night?”

Tang Xu’en felt as if his heart had instantly moved into his throat. It was beating non-stop. He thought in horror to himself: Was it not a dream last night? It was real?

He was so frightened, his breathing stopped. He looked back at Ji Wei in both confusion and horror.

Everything seemed to be at a standstill.

After a while, Ji Wei suddenly laughed. With a somewhat cunning glint, he smiled with narrowed eyes, making it hard for people to see the look in it clearly, but his laugh was hearty, “Look at how scared you are. It’s nothing —– You just insisted on sleeping in the same bed as me last night so I let you do that but you ended up saying a lot of sleep talk in the middle of the night.”

Phew.

What was he thinking? Sure enough, it was just a dream!

Tang Xu’en’s face and ears turned red.

But—-

Let alone having such a shameful dream, he actually slept talk?
