ABSS – CH8

Chapter 8

All their old classmates knew how close Tang Xu’en and Ji Wei were.

Not long after Ji Wei returned to the country, the two of them went on a trip together. When Tang Xu’en posted a picture they took after reaching the summit to his page on WeChat, someone immediately ran over and asked: [What?! You and Ji Wei are still in contact??]

Tang Xu’en didn’t understand what they meant.

Why not?

Friendship is something that should last a lifetime.

The other party then said with embarrassment: [Because Ji Wei gradually stopped contacting everyone after he went to university and even more so after going abroad. It felt like he had disappeared from this world.]

Tang Xu’en: [No? I have always been writing letters to him and talking to him on the phone.]

And it also wasn’t just the occasional letter or call here and there.

Telecommunication was still not very developed back then. The phone Tang Xu’en had could only send out text messages and make calls and he also didn’t have a computer at home, so it was very troublesome contacting Ji Wei.

It stood to reason that they would eventually lose contact, but Ji Wei seemed to write to him almost as frequently as one or two letters per week—–

Only at this time was he able to escape from the busy and tiring reality of adult life and secretly take a breath and relax in the world of friendship with Ji Wei.

Letters were the cheaper way of communication. In the first half year of Ji Wei’s overseas stint, Tang Xu’en didn’t see Ji Wei’s face the entire time.

He missed Ji Wei very much.

They would at least be able to see each other during winter and summer vacations when Ji Wei was in university.

One day, he heard that he could use a computer to video chat, so he took out some money from his food expenses and wrote a letter to Ji Wei asking if they could try doing this. He wanted to see Ji Wei.

And then, on a day while he was still at work, Ji Wei suddenly called.

It was very abnormal. Ji Wei knew that he had to work during the day so he wouldn’t call him at this hour, especially with the time difference.

It must be something urgent.

As Tang Xu’en thought this, he wiped his hands and, for the first time in history, he temporarily put aside his business and answered the phone. Fortunately, Tang Yuan was around to help with the store that day so he was able to have someone take over for the time being.

He hurried off to see what was going on for Ji Wei to suddenly call him this hastily.

Amidst the noisy crowd, he asked, “Hello? What’s wrong?”

Overseas phone calls were very expensive. Although it was Ji Wei who had called so it was not his own expense, he still felt distressed.

Ji Wei said, “I received your latest letter. You said you wanted to video chat with me?”

Tang Xu’en said, “Yeah.”

Ji Wei asked, “I thought you didn’t have a computer at home? Did you buy one?”

Tang Xu’en wiped his hands again and glanced at his younger brother. He walked a little further away and said quietly, “No. I secretly saved up some money and can go to an internet cafe to video chat.”

Tang Xu’en felt very ashamed about the fact that he had secretly saved up some money and not used it on his younger brothers. He however also had his own life to live.

When Ji Wei heard this, he let out a soft laugh. As if he was also a culprit in crime, he also lowered his voice and said mysteriously, “En. Then let’s agree on a time.”

“I hear customers on your end. Ah, that’s right, your store should be open right now. I didn’t disturb you, did I?”

Tang Xu’en said, “It’s okay, it’s okay. It’s just answering a phone call, it won’t affect anything.”

Ji Wei’s tone had calmed down and he seemed to have regained his sense of reason. He continued lightly, “I should’ve waited until it was your break to call you, I’m sorry. I got too excited when I saw you say that in the letter and called you without thinking.”

“Xiao Xu, I really miss you.”

Tang Xu’en responded, “Me too.”

Even despite being thousands of miles apart, Tang Xu’en still felt that their friendship was like a very strong thread, binding them tightly together.

In the blink of an eye, more than ten years had passed since they first met.

So when Ji Wei returned to the country and the two of them met again, Tang Xu’en didn’t feel awkward at all.

When he picked Ji Wei up at the airport, the two were still able to talk about everything and anything.

The only difference was that he felt that after Ji Wei had gone abroad, he seemed to have become more fashionable than when he was a student. He dressed even more stylishly than the male celebrities in movies and magazines. With the youthfulness gone, he now gave off the air of a handsome and mature man.

He on the other hand was still the same. Except for immersing himself in his own small business all these years and becoming a small member of the society, he wasn’t good at anything else.

Ji Wei had several years of professional experience working at well known companies abroad. After returning to the country, he directly took over his family’s company and smoothly made his way up. It could be said that he was a promising young man with a bright future ahead.

What followed that was Tang Xu’en, someone who originally wasn’t often contacted by his old classmates, suddenly receiving a lot of ‘friendly messages’. Of course, they all started to ask about Ji Wei after just a few words of small talk.

Gradually, with Tang Xu’en acting as the bridge, Ji Wei would also sometimes participate in some of the activities organised by their old classmates, and he would always go with Tang Xu’en.

This time was also no exception.

The wedding banquet was to be held at a five-star hotel.

They had specially chosen an auspicious date and the event was to start at noon.

So that they could accommodate the guest’s schedules and make sure more of them could come and not have to request leave, it was held on a Saturday.

But for Tang Xu’en, it was still a working day, and it was also a busy day.

Fortunately, it was the university vacation and both his younger brothers were at home. Meng Tianyou had also come over, saying that he happened to be free and wanted to help out his eldest brother-in-law.

Tang Xu’en felt very uneasy as he recalled how much this man’s net worth was. Xiao Yuan however said cheerily that it was fine so he could only agree to it.

These past two days, Tang Xu’en had received a lot of information about Meng Tianyou from Ji Wei: He had never been married, never had an ex-girlfriend or an ex-boyfriend and he was all alone with both his parents having passed away. It is said however that he had a bad temper and was a particularly scary boss.

He later also learnt that Meng Tianyou’s company was the sponsor of Tang Yuan’s research project. The two probably met because of this.

Then in that case….looks like there really is nothing wrong with him except that he’s a little old.

Age also wasn’t a big problem. Meng Tianyou didn’t look old.

Perhaps he should just wait and see how things go.

Tang Xu’en felt that he had a pretty good intuition. He was able to judge quite accurately whether a person was good or bad just based on his instincts. If he felt that the other party wasn’t good, he wouldn’t force himself to interact with them and would quietly break off the relationship.

Meng Tianyou didn’t give him that feeling of dislike so he probably wasn’t a bad person.

Before leaving for the wedding banquet, he even saw Meng Tianyou wearing an apron. It was quite a funny sight.

He had only briefly glanced at it before looking away. He thought to himself: Ji Wei would also come and help whenever he had time.

Especially during the summer vacation right after graduating from high school, Ji Wei had spent every day of the vacation at his store helping out. Because of this, several customers had even asked if it was a store run by brothers, thinking that Ji Wei was also part of his family.

Tang Xu’en wanted to pay Ji Wei but Ji Wei refused to accept it. He said with a dark expression that if he paid him, it would mean that he didn’t consider him a true friend. Thinking about it, he felt that it made sense. Ji Wei was a young master from a well-off family. That small amount of money was nothing to him. But even if the other party didn’t need that money, it didn’t mean that he should just accept his help without returning the favour.

Favour, favour.

Favours are the most important thing in the world.

The moment he returned to his senses, he could no longer remember how much favour he owed Ji Wei.

He didn’t know if he would be able to return it all in this lifetime of his.

While thinking about this, he walked out of the alley and saw a car parked by the side of the road.

Ji Wei was standing next to the car waiting for him.

When Tang Xu’en went over, Ji Wei opened the car door for him.

Tang Xu’en very naturally got into the passenger seat and fastened his seat belt. Only then did he realise something: Wait a minute. Why was he so used to Ji Wei taking care of him?

Just as this thought appeared in his mind, before he could think any further, he heard Ji Wei say, “I have to go back to the company after the banquet, do you want to go with me? Or do you want to stay behind and catch up with them?”

Tang Xu’en asked, “When do you need to leave?”

Ji Wei, “About one o’clock. I have to get back to the company before one thirty.”

“Oh.” Tang Xu’en remembered something, “Then if you still have to drive and work, you shouldn’t drink.”

Ji Wei said, “En, I won’t drink too much.”

Ji Wei had good driving skills. Even on bumpy roads, he drove very stably. The car was also clean and tidy and it even smelt good.

The only discordant thing was the cute bobblehead of a pig at the front.

Needless to say, it was from Tang Xu’en.

Tang Xu’en could also smell the men’s cologne on Ji Wei. It was cool and exquisite and the fragrance was subtle.

Unwittingly, Tang Xu’en’s face quietly turned red again.

It was all because that dream was too realistic. Even the fragrance in the dream seemed like it was real as it lingered around his nose, the scent not dissipating.

Almost every night, that scene from his dream would resurface as soon as he closed his eyes.

And he would feel ashamed every time he woke up.

It was probably because he had been single for too long and that was why he had become so shameless, to even have those kinds of thoughts about his good friend.

After waiting for a red light to turn green, Ji Wei suddenly asked, “What is it? Why are you staring at me like that? Do you have something to say?”

When Ji Wei said this, he didn’t even turn his head or look his way, but he seemed to have caught onto every move he made like it was the back of his hands.

Ah, was he staring at Ji Wei? Tang Xu’en only now realised that it did seem to be the case. He had been too engrossed earlier. He said, “It’s nothing.”

Ji Wei turned to him and smiled, “Then why were you staring at me? Because I’m handsome?”

Tang Xu’en stammered, “Y-yes, you’re very handsome. Don’t look at me, focus on driving.”

Ji Wei turned back and looked ahead. His expression however was a little downcast. As his fingers rested loosely on the steering wheel, he exhaled a breath through his nose and muttered to himself, “What use is there to be handsome.”

How is there no use? Tang Xu’en thought to himself. But Ji Wei was not from the same world as him. Even with work related problems, he could no longer empathise with Ji Wei and help him out. And so, Tang Xu’en didn’t say anything.

The bride and groom were both their junior high school classmates. They had secretly dated when they were teenagers and, during this journey that lasted many years, they had separated and got back together, went round and round in circles, and still ended up standing together here as bride and groom.

A gentle smile appeared on Tang Xu’en’s face, “Congratulations. I wish you two many years of happiness.”

Ji Wei also smiled and said, “Congratulations on your marriage.”

The groom was smiling brightly, his lips stretching from one ear to the other, “Haha, thank you, thank you. Both of you are very busy people and I thought I wouldn’t be able to have your presence today. Thank you for coming to celebrate this with me. Hurry and come in and sit down. Sit at the table for classmates.”

Tang Xu’en still liked giving red envelopes the traditional way. He handed over a red envelope to the newlywed’s family member who was responsible for managing the guestbook for the day.

The other party looked at the writing on the envelope and asked, “Is it a gift from both of you?”

Tang Xu’en, “En.”

Before getting out of the car, Ji Wei belatedly said that he had forgotten to bring a red envelope so he took out a wad of pink coloured notes from his wallet and asked him to put it in his one and write his name on it. That way it would be considered a gift from the both of them.

Tang Xu’en felt that it was a little inappropriate….That was something only a married couple would do.

But Ji Wei said, “Everyone already knows that we’re close friends so it’s not strange for us to give a gift to them together.”

Tang Xu’en thought about it for a moment and felt that it made sense.

When he signed the guestbook, he signed it first and then Ji Wei signed it after him.

Ji Wei’s name was written very close to his. Both of them had pretty good handwriting. Tang Xu’en felt that this was the result of so many years of letter writing. It stood out among the other signatures in the guestbook.

But—–

How should he put it?

Tang Xu’en looked at the other signatures in the book and saw that none of the couples who had signed before them had their names written so closely together.

He couldn’t help but feel that something was strange.
