ABSS – CH9

Chapter 9

The bride and groom got along with people well and had many acquaintances. Just their classmates alone filled two full tables of twelve people each.

Everyone cheerfully greeted them.

At a quick glance, more than half were already married. Tang Xu’en had been to most of their weddings.

Each time, he would give at least five hundred to a thousand in gift money. With it all added up, it was quite a lot of money. When he thought of all the gift money he had given out these past few years, not knowing when he would be able to get them back, Tang Xu’en could only let out a light sigh.

Ji Wei asked, “What’s wrong?”

Tang Xu’en covered his mouth and whispered to him, “I was just feeling a little heartache thinking about all the gift money I have been giving out.”

“Won’t you get it all back when it’s your turn to get married? I will be sure to pack a big red envelope for you when the time comes.” Ji Wei smiled. The smile however didn’t seem to reach his eyes and it contained a faint chill that was cold enough to make Tang Xu’en shiver.

Did he say something wrong just now? Is Ji Wei angry? Why is he angry?

Tang Xu’en couldn’t figure it out.

Ji Wei’s personality should be like the spring breeze but why has he been so unpredictable lately?

Tang Xu’en scratched the tip of his nose and looked carefully at him, “It’s too distant. I don’t even know when it’ll happen.”

Their table was all men.

The table next to them were all their female classmates.

The banquet hadn’t started yet.

Tang Xu’en could feel many eyes looking at him. He looked over and saw several of the girls glancing at him before turning to whisper to each other.

Tang Xu’en felt embarrassed being looked at by them but he didn’t read too much into it. He felt that they probably weren’t looking at him, but at Ji Wei.

That was very normal.

Ji Wei was like a top quality diamond and he was also a good person in general.

If he were a woman, he would also want to marry Ji Wei.

At this time, an old classmate next to him gently nudged Tang Xu’en with his elbow, “Old Tang, Old Tang.”

Tang Xu’en, “Huh?”

This person was his former deskmate. He used to be tall and thin, like a bamboo pole, but his body grew very quickly after he got married. He claimed that it was ‘happy fat’. He said to Tang Xu’en, “Let me speak to you about something. My wife has a younger cousin who is turning twenty five this year. She is a nurse and currently works at the public hospital. She thinks that you two are a good match. Do you want to consider it?”

Tang Xu’en, “Huh??”

He was stunned by this sudden blind date invitation. He asked, “Why are you suddenly talking about this?”

The classmate said, “It’s not sudden. I originally wanted to talk to you about it in a few days’ time but since we’re all gathered here now, I figured it would be a good time to talk about it.”

Tang Xu’en felt that it had been almost eight hundred years since someone asked him to go on a blind date. Ever since he got older and older, his value in the market had been on a steady decline. In fact, most ran off the moment they heard that both his parents had passed away and he still had two younger brothers he had to support.

Tang Xu’en asked shyly, “W-would I be suitable? Does she know about my family’s circumstances?”

His classmate said, “She knows. I’ve also shown her your photos. She is someone who cares about looks and wants to find someone who looks good. She took a liking to you as soon as she saw your photo.”

Can I be considered someone good-looking? Tang Xu’en wondered to himself. He was too flattered that he didn’t have the heart to refuse.

Tang Xu’en, “Then…..”

Just as he spoke up, Ji Wei who was sitting to his right suddenly pulled him over and asked, “Did you bring a lighter? I wanted to have a smoke but forgot to bring one.”

Tang Xu’en’s attention was immediately redirected. He turned his head and looked over, “Ah, I didn’t bring any.”

He didn’t smoke in the first place, why did Ji Wei suddenly ask him for a lighter? Did work tire him out, causing him to get confused? Moreover, Ji Wei also wasn’t a big smoker. Why did he suddenly want to go for a smoke?”

Tang Xu’en added, “It might be better not to smoke. It’s not good to be smoking in public places.”

Ji Wei, “En. You’re right.”

On his left, his old classmate was still asking him, “So, how about it?”

“Here, let me show you a photo of my wife’s cousin.”

It was unknown if it was because he was interrupted by Ji Wei just now, but that memory of Ji Wei kissing him appeared in his mind again.

Tang Xu’en really couldn’t push this to the back of his mind. Until he has sorted this matter out and is able to forget about it, he felt that he couldn’t bring himself to go on blind dates. So he said to his old classmate, “Sorry, it’s probably better to just forget about it. As you already know, I am in a lot of debt. This won’t be good for the other party.”

This was a lie.

He had already paid off all his debts two years ago and had even saved up some money.

The other party expressed their disappointment but they were able to accept his reason, “Alright then, I’ll tell my wife about it later. But Old Tang, you can’t always be like this.”

“You shouldn’t worry about that too much and just get married first. After a man is married, he will have more motivation to make money. There’s nothing wrong with having a wife and children when you can.”

Tang Xu’en just lightly laughed it off.

When he looked over at Ji Wei again, Ji Wei seemed to be in a much better mood.

Ji Wei quietly asked him, “Why didn’t you agree to the blind date? I thought you wanted to get married?”

Tang Xu’en felt that he was slandering him. He furrowed his brow and said, “When did I say that I wanted to get married? I’ve never said that. Aren’t you the one who wanted to get married?”

Those words were spoken without a thought.

Tang Xu’en felt a little regretful as soon as he said it.

Ji Wei didn’t take it badly. Instead, a soft smile surfaced to his face and he said lightly while looking intently at him, “Yeah, I do want to get married.”

Tang Xu’en’s mind went blank. While panicking, words blurted out of his mouth, “Did your family arrange any blind dates for you? A young lady from a background that matches well with yours?”

Tang Xu’en didn’t know what he was doing. He clearly knew Ji Wei’s schedule. Ji Wei had never gone on a blind date and would always go and find him whenever he had time.

Ji Wei said as a matter of factly, “They have.”

Tang Xu’en’s heart stopped for a moment.

Ji Wei then said, “But I didn’t agree to any of them.”

Huh? Why not?

Tang Xu’en was stunned. He felt as if a small rabbit had been thrown into his chest, hopping around mischievously.

Tang Xu’en said awkwardly, “Oh.”

He wanted to ask why, but Ji Wei had already turned around to chat with the others.

After the wedding processes were over and the food was served, the men began to pass cigarettes and alcohol around, the atmosphere lively and loud.

As soon as he saw someone trying to persuade Ji Wei to drink, Tang Xu’en immediately grew anxious. He stepped forward to receive Ji Wei’s drink instead, “I’ll drink it. I’ll drink for him. Ji Wei still needs to drive later and can’t drink.”

The other party had already drunk until his neck and face was red. They felt that it wasn’t a big deal, “It’s fine to drink a little.”

“He really can’t drink.” Tang Xu’en snatched over the glass and drank it all in one go.

And he also really wanted a drink right now. It would help with taking his mind off his worries.

Everyone laughed and teased:

“Old Tang, why are you so protective of Ji Wei? You won’t even let him have a single drop of alcohol.”

“You two are such good friends. Even after so many years, you still treat Ji Wei very well.”

“Looks like true friendship still exists in this world.”

Tang Xu’en was the type to be affected by the alcohol as soon as he had some. His face was already flushed red, “He really needs to drive after this. I got a ride with him to get here and still need him to take me home later.”

Without him realising himself, he ended up downing a lot of alcohol.

Tang Xu’en was originally not a very good drinker but he downed glass after glass, drinking more than what he had last time.

And what happened?

In the end, he was completely drunk. Ji Wei had to grab his hand and tell him to stop drinking for him to stop drinking the alcohol being served to him.

Ji Wei supported him to the car and put him in the backseat. He lowered the seat to let him lie down and lectured, “Drinking so much despite not being a good drinker, are you stupid?”

Tang Xu’en was slumped against the seat, “You still have work after this, how could I let you drink?”

Ji Wei prepared everything for him; a vomit bag, a towel and a pillow. Tang Xu’en fell asleep almost instantly.

When Tang Xu’en saw the garage, he asked, “Why did you take me to your place?”

Ji Wei asked, “You don’t want to come?”

Tang Xu’en thought for a moment, “No, I want to come.”

After getting out, Ji Wei said, “Let me carry you upstairs.”

How old was he? It would be too embarrassing. Tang Xu’en shook his head, “No need, I can go myself. Just give me a hand.”

Before he could take more than a few steps, he almost fell.

Ji Wei pulled him over, “I’ll carry you. Let me carry you.”

Tang Xu’en had no choice but to agree. It felt comfortable lying on his back, “Ji Wei, do you remember that one time in high school when I fainted? You also carried me to the infirmary.”

Ji Wei, “I remember. You were such a fool. In order to save some money, you didn’t eat anything and fainted because of that.”

Tang Xu’en closed his eyes and mumbled, “My vision got hazy from the alcohol earlier and when I looked over at the groom, I thought it was you. I even thought: How handsome.”

“Oh, when the time comes and you get married and become a groom, you would definitely be very handsome.”

Ji Wei didn’t say anything. He just slowly and quietly walked on.

They entered the elevator. Tang Xu’en nuzzled his cheek against his shoulder. He seemed to have fallen asleep seeing how steady his breathing was. Suddenly, he woke up again, and asked while still in a confused state, “Ji Wei, when you get married, will you ask me to be your best man?”

Ji Wei watched the floor number on the screen change for a while before saying, “….I won’t.”

Those words were spoken very coldly and firmly.

He received no response from Tang Xu’en.

He had fallen asleep.

He tucked Tang Xu’en into his own bed without any complaint.

Tang Xu’en was woken up by gentle pats on his cheek. Ji Wei said, “Take off your coat. I’ll bring over a towel for you to wipe your face and you can sleep after that. I’ll head over to the company once we’re done.”

Tang Xu’en stripped down to just his singlet and boxers. He roughly wiped his face and neck and then laid back down again.

He was very drunk and his head also hurt.

Ji Wei then handed him his phone. The number had already been dialled —- Oh, that’s right. Ji Wei knows the password to his phone and he also knows Ji Wei’s.

Ji Wei said, “Call your younger brothers and tell them that you’re drunk and will be returning late today.”

Ji Wei did everything for him. Without needing him to hold the phone himself, Ji Wei held the phone up to his ear for him and he just had to drowsily repeat what he told him just now, “I’m drunk. Won’t be coming home today.”

Tang Zheng complained, “You’re drunk again. Big brother, you….”

Tang Xu’en, “That’s all. So noisy, I’m going to sleep now. Bye.”

Ji Wei ended the call.

He said softly to him, “Go sleep.”

Tang Xu’en slept until the sky was dark outside.

He woke up because he was thirsty. He got out of bed and went to get a glass of water. Ji Wei’s place had an open style kitchen and the faucet was connected to a smart water purification hot water system so he was able to drink from it directly.

He downed an entire glass and then placed it on the counter.

But Tang Xu’en didn’t get up. He also didn’t know what he was thinking at the time. Perhaps it was because he still wasn’t completely sober, so he decided to stay in bed and pretend to be asleep.

Ji Wei silently entered the bedroom and walked over to the bed. He asked softly, “Xiao Xu, are you awake? Xiao Xu?”

“It’s time to go home.”

Tang Xu’en pretended to be still asleep.

Unlike last time, he was much more sober today. He knew exactly what was happening and was certain that he wasn’t dreaming.

He just wanted to test it out….

Test and see what Ji Wei would do when he is drunk.

Tang Xu’en could feel Ji Wei sitting down on the ground beside him, silently watching him.

He wondered if Ji Wei had noticed that he was pretending to be asleep.

Ji Wei just watched him. It was very strange. Even without opening his eyes and seeing it himself, he could still feel how gentle Ji Wei’s gaze was, like feathers caressing his cheek.

After an unknown amount of time passed, Ji Wei reached out to him.

What was Ji Wei going to do?

Tang Xu’en suddenly grew nervous. He suppressed his instinctive desire to avoid his touch and waited for Ji Wei.
