Chapter 2
[Yes, you can call me System. Perhaps in your mind, only a system can rationally explain my existence.]
[I know what you are thinking. You are not sick. I am your gift, or should I say, your ability?]
[After coming into contact with a pollution source, those who become infected are known as Pollutants and those who do not get infected and successfully awaken their innate ability are called Enlighteneds. This matter will be more widely accepted by society in about a few more months, the truth cannot be hidden after all…What kind of world do you think you are living in? In fact, you have already met an Enlightened. Very clever…It’s Lin Sinan. That’s right, and so are you.]
[Although you are a little weak, you have me. I am a super amazing ability. You’re really in luck.]
[You weren’t the one who obtained me. I chose you.]
…..
…..
Lu Yan opened his eyes. He turned on the TV and changed it to the news channel.
The reports still weren’t able to move away from the lockdowned H City.
“The mutant has been dealt with. Please rest assured, the pollution disease this time is not contagious.”
The reporter smiled sweetly in front of the camera.
Unbeknownst to the audience, she was not in the heavily polluted H City and was instead in a studio in her own city.
The world was still very peaceful.
He pulled open the curtain and coldly looked downstairs. Office workers squeezing onto buses, college students angrily complaining about the morning rush; everything seemed unchanged.
If it weren’t for yesterday’s surgery, Lu Yan would have also thought that there would be no changes in the future.
The fish egg was buried in the flowerpot.
While he did that, he could hear the extremely noisy notifications from the system.
[Although it is only a low-level Pollutant, it has a special function as a parasitic Kingfish egg.]
[Have you played Hungry Shark Evolution? The hatched Kingfish can devour the eggs of other parasitic fish.]
[It can’t be possible that there are still doctors thinking that traditional treatment methods would be useful against the pollution disease?]
The moment Lu Yan put down the garden trowel, his phone suddenly rang.
Lu Yan was stunned for a moment before answering the phone.
“Dr. Lu, help me….” Dr. Li’s voice on the other end was hoarse.
Dr. Li’s name was Li Rui. He was the doctor who had performed the surgery with him yesterday.
“I don’t know who to turn to. I don’t dare go to the hospital.”
It was currently winter. K City was near the coast and at a low latitude, so it wasn’t very cold.
Under his thick jacket, Li Rui’s arms were bloody from all the scratching and his nails were also covered in blood and flesh. It looked almost like a scene of self-mutilation. Completely unaware of his state, he continued to scratch at his skin with his overly sharp nails.
There were translucent fish eggs embedded into Li Rui’s arms, resembling small blisters. It looked eerily red from the blood.
He was sitting on a bench in the park, wearing a hat, padded jacket, down jacket and even a windbreaker, but a sharp chill still spread from his limbs to the depths of his soul. The parasitic eggs were robbing heat from their host in their frantic attempt to survive.
Perhaps it was because his expression was so strange, the elderly people doing morning exercises in the park stayed away from him.
Li Yan asked, “What happened?”

As a result, Pollution Disease Prevention and Control Centres were established all across the world.
Li Rui shook his head frantically, “When I was in college, I interned at the Pollution Disease Centre in A City. Those people would be gathered together and killed with high heat….I don’t want to die! Help me, Dr. Lu! We did the surgery yesterday. You also heard what that officer said. As long as the eggs are removed, it will be fine.”
Helping those in need was a duty of a doctor. Li Rui had not met anyone who carried out this responsibility and belief more than Lu Yan.
This was also the reason why he reached out to Lu Yan.
Before Lu Yan could express his thoughts, there was a knock on the door of his place that normally didn’t get any visitors.
“Lu Yan, I’m currently at Qu…”
“One second. I’ll call you back later.”

Lu Yan ended the call and checked the intercom. The visitor’s face appeared on the display screen by the door.
There were two people, one of whom was Lin Sinan from yesterday.
Today he wore casual clothes; sneakers, jeans, a white T-shirt and a dark outer jacket. He was dressed like a high school adonis from the suburbs coming to the city for the first time to attend university.
Lin Sinan said to the camera, “Hello, Dr. Lu. I am Lin Sinan. We have met before. Because the surgery yesterday carried a risk of infection, I have brought my colleague with me to help check on you. Don’t worry, we are proper officials.”
Lin Sinan searched around for a while before finally finding the ID in his colleague’s pocket.
‘K City Pollution Disease Prevention and Control Centre’. At the top was a photo and there was an official seal below it. The job title was ‘Inspector’.
Lu Yan opened the door and took out shoe covers.
Lin Sinan entered the apartment and calmly looked around.
This place looked like a display home, there was almost no trace of life. In the semi-open kitchen, even the chopping board was extremely clean, like it had never been used.
On top of that, Lin Sinan also noticed something interesting.
Lu Yan probably knew how to use a bow and arrow. There was an archery target hanging from the wall in the living room that had numerous holes on it.
The inspector opened his briefcase, sat down at the dining table and said softly, “The examination would require drawing some blood. Is that fine with you, Dr. Lu?”
The rectangular suitcase was placed a little askew.
Lu Yan controlled his urge to straighten it and just silently stretched out his arm.
The blood collection was quickly completed. The blood was then placed into an unfamiliar square device.
A few minutes later, the inspector said, “You are not suffering from pollution disease. If you experience any fever or physical discomfort during this time, you can contact our Pollution Disease Prevention and Control Centre. We will offer the support and assistance you require.”
Lu Yan looked into his eyes and asked, “Is the pollution disease really just an infectious disease?”
“The pollution disease is certainly an infectious disease, it is a new type of genetic mutation. Pollution disease is highly contagious. A few years ago, it had resulted in tens of thousands of deaths abroad. But thanks to the efforts of scientists from all over the world, the disease has been brought under control. Pollution diseases are now only found in small towns, there is no need to worry.”
In Lu Yan’s mind, the system snorted: [That’s just because they were all low-level Pollutants. C-Grade Pollutants have the ability to destroy an entire city and countless lives were lost in the disaster that year. Unfortunately, being too weak is the original sin of mankind.]
[By the way, I should remind you that you should hurry and send them away. If you don’t want to be brought over to the Research Institute, that is.]
Sensing the awkward silence, Lu Yan spoke up, “Thank you for clarifying. Is there anything else you need?”
“…..No. I wish you all the best.”
“Thank you.”
A moment later, the two officials from the Pollution Disease Prevention and Control Centre left Lu Yan’s apartment.
Lin Sinan spoke first, “Mysophobia is one of the most common clinical manifestations of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Living environment was normal, there were no pollution sources.”
The inspector, “Lu Yan — His father was a pollution disease patient and has numerous records of domestic violence. His mother committed suicide by jumping off a building when he was six.”
“Lu Yan was imprisoned and abused by his father for an extended period of time and was rescued at the age of twelve. Through assessment, he was diagnosed with photophobia, claustrophobia and a split personality disorder. The split personality was antisocial and highly aggressive.”
“At the age of sixteen, Lu Yan recovered and was discharged from the hospital. That same year, his father became a Pollutant and was detained by the Research Institute, code number 18.”
“In 2117, Pollutant 18 escaped from the Research Institute. This was the only incident of an A-Grade Pollutant escaping. Although Pollutant 18’s mutation was in the brain, researchers were able to conclude from this that Pollutants would not have intelligence that is inferior to that of humans in the later stages of infection.”

Lin Sinan, “Yes. That is why the institute has been monitoring Lu Yan for a long time. They wanted to see if 18 would have any contact with him.”
“Captain Lin, you are aware of my ability. I sensed a dangerous air from him.” The inspector said solemnly.
He was a support type Enlightened with [Ability: Warning]. It allowed him to detect danger to a certain extent.
“The test results are out. Spiritual power threshold: 0, mutation degree: 0. An ordinary human. I thought he could be an Enlightened.” Lin Sinan dug out a tranquilliser from his pocket and took one, “Let’s go. It’s time to go to the other side.”
According to the research, living beings with a mutation degree between 0 to 100 are still considered human. Enlighteneds are humans who have been infected, possess an ability but still have a mutation degree of less than 100. The strength of an Enlightened is determined by their spiritual power threshold.
When the mutation degree exceeds 100, they are no longer human. Like those animals, plants and even inorganic substances, they were regarded as Pollutants.
And Lu Yan’s was 0.
*

Without any hesitation, Li Rui ran.
The two people, who were in the middle of taking out their work ID cards, were stunned. They then immediately gave chase.
Li Rui’s physical strength wasn’t very good. He would usually collapse from exhaustion after doing a few hours of surgery and at this moment, he was bundled up like a penguin. His speed however was getting faster and faster, almost like a gust of wind.
As he ran, his hearing became extra sharp. He could even hear those people cursing from afar——
“Wasn’t it a parasitic infection? Why did the host mutate?”
Mutate…..?
That’s right. When ordinary humans are infected by the pollution disease, the abnormal changes to their bodies are called mutations.
Li Rui didn’t run very long before the sound of a helicopter could be heard from above.
He looked up and saw the helicopter door open. Standing at the door, Lin Sinan, who was fully armed and tied with a safety rope, raised his sniper rifle.
Through the speaker, his voice spread very far, “Please stop moving immediately and squat down with your hands on your head. We are officials from the Pollution Disease Prevention and Control Centre. Through preliminary assessment, we believe you have been infected by the parasite. Please stop moving immediately! We will send you for specialised treatment!”
“If you refuse to accept the investigation and treatment, we will take emergency measures.”
Li Rui however turned a deaf ear to that. He continued running frantically.
A bead of sweat flowed down from Lin Sinan’s temple. Through his earphones, he received an order from the headquarters, “The target has been infected by a parasite and is showing signs of mutation. His body will soon become a pollution source. Killing is advised.”
And so, Lin Sinan pulled the trigger.
Using [Ability: Homing Shot], he would automatically hit any target that is within his range of shooting.
He was hundreds of metres above the ground, Li Rui was running and the helicopter was unsteady. It was hard to imagine how someone would be able to aim accurately in such circumstances.
But the moment the gunshot sounded, blood blossomed on Li Rui’s body.
He however didn’t collapse as Lin Sinan had expected.
It was a particularly horrifying sight. The head was gone, but the body was still moving.
Lin Sinan frowned. He fired two more successive shots. They were fired no more than ten seconds after the first shot.
The sniper rifle he used was loaded with heavy bullets, so if anyone was hit by it, they would definitely be dead.
It was certainly impossible for Li Rui to be alive.
But just like the horsehair worm parasite in a praying mantis’s body that could control the body to jump into water and kill itself, the same was true for the parasite in him.
The sky that was gloomy earlier suddenly began to rain.
In the heavy rain, the body finally found its destination.
K City’s moat, Qu River.
It excitedly jumped into the water.
…….
…….
The body was soon recovered.
Lin Sinan paid no heed to the pollution and proceeded to take off Li Rui’s clothes and carefully check his body.
There was no trace of fish eggs on him.
But no one was happy to see this. Beside them, the river flowed continuously.
The two soldiers lowered their heads in shame, “Sorry, we were unable to catch up to him.”
Generally speaking, there were three stages of mutation, with a buffer period of at least two weeks. It had however only taken a few hours for Li Rui to show signs of mutation after being infected.
It was so strange that even Lin Sinan wasn’t able to react to this news.
As humans evolve, Pollutants would naturally also evolve.
Lin Sinan’s expression turned extremely poor, “The sudden pollution incident will tentatively be classified as B-Grade. C-Grade Pollutant ‘Parasitic Fish’ has mutated, recovery failed. Extent of pollution spread is unclear. Request for support from the headquarters.”

even if the disease wasn’t infectious, why tf would you go outside to a PARK where there’s elderly and kids?? even though it’s proven to not be infectious, there’s still a chance especially when the mutation is still such a mystery for humans. Why would you willingly go outside and take the risk of infecting everyone else even if there’s a small chance of it happening?
