GETOP – CH9

Chapter 9

The quarantine shelter was 13 kilometres away from the Pollution Disease Prevention and Control Centre.

Shen Qingyang was kept inside there. Because he was prohibited from moving around, he could only pass the time by reading vocabulary books.

If it weren’t for the sudden appearance of the pollution disease, he had planned to take CET-4. He didn’t know if the registration fee could be refunded. (KKnotes: CET-4, College English Test 4)

The quarantine shelter was very restless at night.

Although meals were provided here, they couldn’t provide food that the mutants wanted to eat. Special medications could slow down the progression of the disease but it couldn’t relieve them of their hunger.

Every night, there would be mutants disappearing. No one reported it so naturally no one paid it any heed.

Shen Qingyang’s new neighbour was an Osta nearing the end of the second stage of mutation. If everything went according to plan, they would soon be dragged out to be cremated in a few days.

The neighbour knocked lightly on the thin metal wall, “Stop memorising those words. I know you’re too hungry to sleep.”

Shen Qingyang put down the book and lightly made a sound of affirmation.

“Although there is compensation for this disease, I don’t think we will survive. Do you know about the patient in Building 2? The next morning, during morning rounds, there was only blood on the bed sheet and pieces of flesh stuck to the ceiling. They told others that they had died from the disease but they had actually been eaten by someone in the middle of the night.”

“But that mutant who did it was taken out and disposed of the next day.” Shen Qingyang’s voice was very gentle, “Justice may be late but it will never be absent.”

“What do you mean by ‘mutant’? You’re speaking as if you’re not a ‘mutant’ yourself. It’s better to live a miserable life than to die. Who do you think wants to die?” The neighbour’s voice carried some frustration, “I was just transferred here from Building 3. This place here can be considered the intensive care unit. How long have you been here?”

Shen Qingyang thought for a moment, “I came here when I was nearing the end of the second stage of mutation, but it hasn’t been too long. Maybe about a week?”

“Hah, I didn’t expect this place to be so orderly. Buildings 1, 2 and 3 get very chaotic at night, even management couldn’t control them…By the way, my friend, I’m a little hungry.”

Shen Qingyang replied softly, “There are apples and instant noodles in the room. They are provided every day.”

The neighbour let out a low ‘tsk’. A moment later, chewing sounds could be heard from the small room next door.

Shen Qingyang’s hands were still resting on the cover of his book. He felt that tonight might not be very peaceful.

It was clear that the new neighbour was a troublemaker. Management wouldn’t have arranged for him to live next to him otherwise.

Sure enough, in the second half of the night, the sound of nails scratching against the thin metal wall could be heard.

Sharp nails pierced through the metal, making a loud noise.

Logically speaking, all five senses are enhanced in mutants. Just the buzzing of a mosquito in the middle of the night could keep everyone in the building awake. But, in the face of so much noise, no one reacted.

The mutants in Building 4 sneered. They rolled over and covered their heads with their blankets with disinterest.

The wallpaper on the metal wall was sliced open. The neighbour tore apart the metal sheet making up the wall and murmured, “Sorry, I know I shouldn’t be doing this but I’m just too hungry. You’ll die either way whether you get eaten by me or get cremated, so it’ll be better to die in my stomach. I’ll even spend the rest of my life thanking you….”

As he spoke, the bald neighbour felt himself stepping onto something.

He looked down and saw what seemed to be a long tentacle. The tentacle was covered in fleshy masses and each of them had an eye embedded in it, some looking at him with pity, some looking at him with mockery.

“Is that so?” Shen Qingyang asked gently while sitting at his desk.

The neighbour stiffly looked up at the man in front of him.

Shen Qingyang’s face was still the same as before but, from the waist down, his legs were gone and they had been replaced by octopus tentacles.

These tentacles filled the small and cramped room, climbing the walls like climbing plants.

It wasn’t that there hadn’t been any unusual incidents in Building 4.

On the first night here, there was. When management staff woke up, all the mutants in Building 4 were dead, leaving only Shen Qingyang.

Shen Qingyang said that he had only acted in self-defense. From the surveillance recordings, it was indeed the case.

Although he was a mutant, Shen Qingyang had never taken the initiative to attack anyone and he would even help maintain order in this place. On top of that, it had been a long time but he was still not showing signs of reaching the third stage of mutation. This resulted in conflicting opinions from the people at the top.

But on the third day, the management staff no longer had this concern.

They concluded that even if they fought against him together, they wouldn’t be Shen Qingyang’s opponent…

Because of his presence, Building 4, which should have been the most chaotic one, became the most orderly ward in the quarantine shelter.

Tentacles wrapped around the neighbour’s body, not giving him room to struggle.

Shen Qingyang still had a warm smile on his face, “Since you know that living a miserable life is better than dying, why are you still trying to court death?”

…….

…….

Squelching sounds could be heard coming from the small room. Shen Qingyang didn’t use his mouth to eat, he relied on the tentacles.

These tentacles penetrated into the mutant’s brain and, very soon, the almost two-metre tall mutant was sucked dry, leaving only skin and bones.

The management staff turned on the lights. His hands were trembling as he tried to unlock the door.

When he pushed open the door, the room that was a little over thirty square metres in size was filled with the smell of blood.

At first, the space given to Shen Qingyang was only about nine square metres, but as his tentacles grew longer and longer, the staff had no choice but to knock down the walls of several nearby rooms to let him stretch his legs.

Shen Qingyang pointed to the dried mummy on the ground and explained, “He tried to attack me first.”

Shen Qingyang was silent for a moment, “I have no objections.”

The staff hurriedly took out a measuring device, “Okay, I’ll create a report for you first and then you will be sent to the Pollution Disease Prevention and Control Centre.”

According to relevant international standards, if the mutation degree exceeds 100, they are no longer considered human and have completed a round of evolution.

For the first time, Shen Qingyang got up from his chair.

His head directly knocked into the ceiling. His black tentacles twisted around before gathering into a ball under him.

When the device scanned the person standing before it, it let out beeps of alarm and shone a red light.

Shen Qingyang, mutation degree, 99.9.

*

Lu Yan sat in front of an examination table. On his left was Bai Qiushi and Lin Sinan was on his right.

After all, he was about to meet a mutant here. If they lowered their guards, the weak and powerless healing type Enlightened may possibly be killed. As such, strong protection was necessary.

Lin Sinan handed over a round metal sheet, “Stick this to the skin. It can be used to measure and monitor your mutation degree.”

According to Lin Sinan, frequent exposure to Pollutants and overuse of abilities would lead to an increase in mutation degree and the associated mutational changes were usually irreversible. For example, Bai Qiushi’s four pupils. After it came about, there was no way of reversing it.

Healers cannot heal themselves. Healing type Enlighteneds are especially cautious about using their abilities.

“Can I really still eat?” Lu Yan asked the system.

Although he felt that he had digested some of the food by now, Lu Yan still felt uncomfortable and bloated.

[It’s not a problem, don’t worry. The next step after reaching your limit is breaking past that limit. They’re already cleaning them and setting them on a plate right in front of you. Isn’t this better than going from door to door looking for one?]

Lu Yan felt that the system’s words made sense.

The first person to be brought in was a mutant in their first stage of mutation.

This person looked like they had just been infected and wasn’t very dangerous. There were only some light facial deformities and webbing of the fingers that hadn’t fully formed.

The mutant was tied to a chair with a frightened expression, like a lamb waiting to be slaughtered.

Lu Yan got up and slowly approached them. He stretched out his hand.

A thin layer of translucent fish scales appeared. Fine white threads came out and attached to the head of the mutant.

The scene was rather strange.

But the two people present were Enlighteneds who had been fighting against Pollutants for many years. They were no longer surprised by strange happenings.

Fish eggs were extracted one after another. The young Kingfish seemed to have also sensed the danger and remained hiding inside Lu Yan’s body, as if in hibernation.

On the instrument, the mutation degree of the mutant showed a significant reduction. It continued to fall from 57 and finally, it reached 0. The mutant’s body would still need a few days to recover but their mental condition was clearly a lot better.

“Ah..ah…Thank you, doctor.”

Lu Yan’s mutation degree didn’t change much. It only increased by 0.07.

The accuracy of this instrument was a lot higher than that of an ordinary electronic measuring device.

Seeing this result, Lin Sinan couldn’t help but reveal a look of joy.

It showed that Lu Yan could indeed treat pollution diseases and his readings itself were also quite stable.

Bai Qiushi filled out a form and sent the relevant information back to the headquarters.

Lin Sinan asked, “Dr. Lu, would you like to take a break?”

Lu Yan was extremely full. He originally wanted to nod but the system suddenly said: [I suggest you take a look. You might not be able to see it later.]

“See what?”

“From a human to a Pollutant, it is called ‘evolution’, but there are successful and failed cases of evolution. The ones who have seen until now, regardless of whether they’re mutants or a Pollutant, are failed cases of evolution. The next one however is an example of a perfectly evolved species.]

“What’s the difference between a perfectly evolved species…and a mutationally evolved species?”

[If I have to use an example, it’s probably the difference between a phoenix and a chicken.]

Lu Yan had to admit that the system’s little tricks had indeed tempted him.

He smiled and said, “I’m fine, there’s no need. Let’s get it over with in one go.”

And so, Lin Sinan said a few words through the intercom.

A moment later, four physically built officers arrived carrying a metal cage.

The metal cage was something they had urgently procured from the zoo. It had a fishing net-like electric grid on the surface of it to prevent the prey inside from escaping.

And as of this moment, there appeared to be an….octopus inside?

The three-metre tall metal cage was filled with black tentacles. The eyes on the surface of the tentacles looked around with curiosity and a hint of danger.

Bai Qiushi’s four pupils moved around his eyes like a compass. He frowned, “This is no different from a Pollutant. Who sent this over?”

As soon as he was done speaking, the tentacles moved away, revealing Shen Qingyang.

Shen Qingyang grabbed at the metal bars with a pleasantly surprised look, “Dr. Lu, I didn’t expect to see you again.”

Lu Yan stared at his face, also a little surprised, “Myself as well.”

He thought the property management employee would turn into an Anura.

“I’m relieved to see that you’re okay. I’ve been worried about you the past few days.” Shen Qingyang asked, “Why is Dr. Lu here?”

Lu Yan answered concisely, “To treat the disease.”

Shen Qingyang smiled, his eyes curving into crescents, “Then it seems that I have once again become your patient.”

Although Shen Qingyang had always been acting amicably, Bai Qiushi still looked at him with vigilance.

Lu Yan moved a little closer to the cage and then stopped and stretched out his hand.

Fine white threads spread out again but when they approached Shen Qingyang, it showed some hesitation.

Shen Qingyang’s expression was full of encouragement. He even took the initiative to extend a section of his tentacle and press it against Lu Yan’s white threads.

Naturally, he was electrocuted.

Shen Qingyang’s smile however didn’t change much. It could be seen that the strength of the electrocution had little effect on him.

The thin threads wrapped around the tentacle. After realising that the other party had no intention to resist, the Kingfish became more excited.

It began to extract the pollution source from Shen Qingyang’s body.

The system gave him a detailed introduction.

[Shen Qingyang, perfectly evolved species, Pollutant. Pollution level: 6100 —- Look at that. He mutated around the same time but he’s much stronger than you.]

[Mutational Abilities: Mimicry, Life Absorption.]

[Mutational Changes: Gigantisation, Tentacles.]

Lu Yan internally expressed his shock, “He’s already a Pollutant?”

[Yes. Mimicry allows him to put on a disguise.]

“But he still seems to have retained his rationality and social behaviours.”

[That’s why it’s called a perfectly evolved species.]

…..

…..

“The mutation degree has reduced.” Lin Sinan stared at the instrument with a tense look, “But the speed is slower.”

After half an hour, Shen Qingyang’s mutation degree had only dropped to 90.

On the contrary, Lu Yan’s mutation degree had increased by 2. His spiritual power threshold on the other hand increased by 270 and was now 440 in total. He would soon be out of the lowest tier.

“Stop the experiment.” Bai Qiushi decided, “This mutant does not need to be sent back to the quarantine shelter. Stay in the Pollution Disease Centre for now.”

Lin Sinan and Bai Qiushi were from the same batch of trainee students and had shared a dormitory before. This was also the reason why Lin Sinan dared to be disrespectful towards him.

He knew Bai Qiushi very well.

Lin Sinan could tell that Bai Qiushi had the intention to kill.

Although he didn’t know the reason for it.

Shen Qingyang didn’t look upset, “Thank you, Mr. Lu. I’m really happy to know that you are okay.”

There was a saying in traditional Chinese medicine called ‘The weak cannot be nourished’.

Lu Yan felt that it described his current condition very well.

He was tired, lethargic and just wanted to sleep.

Lu Yan nodded, “Okay. See you tomorrow.”

Since he was his patient, he should naturally be treated, even if he was a Pollutant.

A pair of legs appeared under him.

He looked more like a human than before, but if someone were to use a detection device on him, they would discover that Shen Qingyang’s mutation degree had already exceeded the dangerous value of 100.

Since his second day in the quarantine shelter, he was no longer human.

Shen Qingyang pulled apart the electric grid. The high voltage made his hairs stand on end and it also tingled a little. It was quite comfortable.

He stopped at the door of the room.

The door required three sets of passwords. It would be impossible for ordinary people to crack it.

And so, Shen Qingyang didn’t use a method ordinary people would use.

A tentacle emerged from behind his waist and forcefully slammed against the wall in front of him, causing it to collapse with a loud crash.

It was as if the wall made from special metals was a piece of tofu. A large hole very easily opened up.

The alarms went off but Shen Qingyang paid it no heed. He even had the leisure time to go to the mirror in the bathroom and fix his clothes.

At the end of the corridor, Bai Qiushi was clearly ready for battle. His eyes were filled with vigilance.

[Ability: Barrier] An invisible wall enveloped the area, blocking all of Shen Qingyang’s escape routes.

Shen Qingyang sighed, “Although I don’t mind fighting you, I don’t really want Dr. Lu to see me in my current state. Moreover, Dr. Lu doesn’t sleep very well. Loud noises will wake him up.”

He turned on the faucet, turned into a long string of bulging flesh and disappeared through the nozzle.

Monsters that can travel through faucets really are nightmare material. Even if they are polite and well spoken 😂

    Thank you for the update!
