GETOP – CH13

Chapter 13

Dream Eater, A-Grade Pollutant.

Lu Yan had read about it on the forum.

Like how the Enlighteneds were categorised into combat, support and special types, Pollutants were also categorised into mental, physical and special types.

A Dream Eater was without a doubt a mental type Pollutant.

Dream Eater, true appearance unknown. A thick mass of fog would cover the location they appeared in. The pollution level near the perimeters of the fog was low but the closer it was to the Dream Eater, the higher the pollution level. The highest would reach 7200 while the lowest level was 200.

Dream Eaters liked to feed on frightened souls. Their way of eating was to drag people into a dream, where their death in the dream equated to death in reality. Research had shown that the dreams created by Dream Eaters were not something conjured from thin air and were instead generated from other people’s memories.

Abilities: Hypnosis. Dream Invasion.

…….

The system’s decision to hide was also a pointless move. Technically speaking, it was also a mental type ability. As a spiritual cloud in someone else’s mental domain, it was likely as conspicuous as a flash grenade.

If he caught the attention of the Dream Eater, Lu Yan would end up in a very miserable state.

The watch on Lu Yan’s wrist was still doing its job. The value displayed was 3.2.

It could be seen that Lu Yan wasn’t as calm as he appeared to be. He had at least experienced 0.1 in shock.

But Lu Yan didn’t hesitate for too long, because his watch suddenly vibrated.

He looked down and saw that the numbers were rapidly increasing.

[Pollution level: 3000…4000…]

The pollution level continued to soar before stopping at 9999.

The upper limit the watch could detect was 9999.

Clearly, something was approaching him.

The air around him became noticeably heavier and it was accompanied by a searing smell of sulfur.

It was very uncomfortable. In less than ten seconds, Lu Yan’s throat was dry and painful.

This value was far higher than what a Dream Eater would have. Either the information he read was wrong, or the Dream Eater had evolved once again, or there was another monster here.

Lu Yan wasn’t curious about this at all. There was a reason why Xiao Ming’s grandfather lived to 100 years of age. (KKnotes: A joke about being able to live to 100 years old because you don’t meddle with other people’s business)

He tightened his grip on the dagger in his hand and slowed down his breathing as much as possible to hide his presence.

But that Pollutant didn’t leave as Lu Yan had hoped.

It stopped in front of the car door.

From Lu Yan’s perspective, he could only see a section of a suit and a white collar that was stained with blood.

From the figure, it appeared to be a rather normal figure belonging to an adult male.

Its hand rested on the handle of the car door.

Lu Yan’s entire body was tense. Almost as soon as he heard the sound of the door opening, he opened the door on the other side and rushed out.

Unfortunately, this attempt of his was useless in the face of this unknown Pollutant.

A thin chain wrapped around his ankle, dragging him back.

The world spun.

Lu Yan landed at the feet of the Pollutant.

The smell of sulfur grew even stronger. It was so strong that Lu Yan felt that he had even lost his sense of smell.

He raised his head and looked at the person in front of him.

It was a man who appeared to be about thirty years old. The skin that was exposed had traces of burns that had even turned black from carbonisation. The skin on both hands, in particular, had all melted off, revealing bright red flesh underneath.

If you ignored those revolting injuries, just from his face alone, he could be described to be handsome.

This wasn’t good news. The Research Institute had long reported that the more human-like a Pollutant was, the higher the pollution level was likely to be, and they are generally of two types.

Lu Yan was certain that he had never seen a Pollutant like this one before, nor had he seen any information about it in the database.

This meant that all the Enlighteneds who have encountered this Pollutant were dead and unable to report back any useful information.

The person in front of him slowly raised their bright red hand. He could faintly feel a scorching heat from it.

Lu Yan was kneeling in front of the man, feeling breathless from the increasingly strong smell of sulfur.

Am I going to die?

This thought flashed through Lu Yan’s mind, but surprisingly, he didn’t feel any fear.

To him, death was peaceful.

But, the next moment, that hand gently caressed the side of Lu Yan’s face.

It was hot, but it unexpectedly wasn’t hot to the point of burning him.

“Little sister, why did you run so far this time?” The Pollutant asked. His voice was surprisingly clear, like spring water hitting against rocks, “I’ve been looking for you for a long time. I’m glad you’re okay. How could this big brother live if something happened to you?”

Lu Yan was stunned. In a split second, he understood what the system meant by ‘you are not a nameless female classmate’.

In this dream, he was the ‘younger sister’ of this Pollutant.

*

Lu Yan rummaged around and pulled out a student ID card from his shirt pocket.

The name on it was ‘Lu Yán’. The photo had been torn off and, on the edge of the card, there was the stamp for ‘M City No. 3 High School’. The year was 2111. (KKnotes: The Yán is different to Lu Yan’s ‘Yan’ but sounds the same)

Ten years ago. It was also a special time for Lu Yan. It was the year his father began to mutate.

He didn’t know the name of this Pollutant. Because the other party called him ‘little sister’, Lu Yan could only reluctantly give him the name ‘Big Brother’.

Judging from the burns on Big Brother’s body and the smell of sulfur, Big Brother’s mutation was related to fire.

Moreover, he had a chain that he used as a weapon.

Lu Yan was tied to the passenger seat and the Pollutant next to him surprisingly drove the car in a very human way.

The road was a little rough, causing Lin Sinan’s body to fall off and land in a ditch. Lu Yan was sad upon seeing this.

Perhaps it was because he had been staring at Lin Sinan for too long, Big Brother’s mood suddenly turned for the worse.

“He’s that bastard you were talking to online, isn’t he? Did you run out this time because you wanted to see him?” Big Brother suppressed his anger and stepped hard on the accelerator, “You’re only in high school, you should be focusing on your studies! All you care about is dating! Why do you have to date when you should be studying?”

“Your big brother was supposed to be in H City preparing for a lawsuit but when the nanny said that you were missing, I immediately flew back to find you. I might not even make it back in time because of you. Why are you so rebellious!”

“I admit that it was wrong of me to make all your boyfriends transfer to another school, but why can’t you understand my good intentions? When can you be a little more well-behaved? Mother and father in the afterlife will be very upset if you continue acting like this.”

Lu Yan, “….”

He didn’t expect the younger sister to have this much dating experience.

The car that Lin Sinan drove was a modified car with a powerful engine. If you drove at full speed, the speed of the car would be no different from flying.

By the side of the road, there were occasionally bodies that had been burnt to a crisp. They appeared to be crawling desperately, seemingly trying to reach for something.

Lu Yan worked in the emergency department of the hospital. This meant that he had some knowledge of various kinds of surgical procedures.

Every year, he would tend to quite a few patients with burns, but the one that had left the deepest impression on him were the patients who were sent over after a fuel truck exploded.

Due to the high temperature, their entire body was burned and their epidermis had all melted off. Some had body parts that were swollen and oozing pus; some had their eyes completely melted into a fleshy membrane and were unable to close it. To ensure they were able to breathe, they even needed to cut open their tracheas.

The most unfortunate thing was that even in this much pain, the patients were still conscious.

Big Brother didn’t reveal much but it allowed Lu Yan to make a few guesses.

Big Brother was likely a lawyer or a judge. Both parents are deceased, leaving behind him and his younger sister. He played the role of both her mother, father and older brother.

As a result, he became overly controlling and protective of his younger sister.

Big Brother was a typical Chinese parent. When she reached high school, he and his rebellious sister had trouble communicating with each other.

The love he gave was too overbearing and the constant repetition of ‘look at what I gave up for you’ was heavy enough to crush a teenage girl’s heart with guilt.

Lu Yan was temporarily unable to determine whether Big Brother was the owner of this dream.

He began to miss the system. If the system was still around, he might even know what colour Big Brother’s underwear is today.

Because he was too close to a pollution source, the watch on Lu Yan’s wrist had already given him three warnings.

Big Brother’s chain was still tied around Lu Yan’s ankle. Big Brother walked very fast but fortunately the chain was long enough to allow Lu Yan to keep up.

It was morning but the surroundings were eerily quiet. There wasn’t even the sound of animals.

The door opened and closed with a heavy thud.

It could be seen that they were very well-off. It was a two-storey building with a garden and garage.

Holding onto the chain, he brought Lu Yan to the second floor.

On the second floor was Lu Yán’s bedroom.

As soon as the door was pushed open, Lu Yan couldn’t help but frown.

The bedroom was quite large, at least 100 square metres, and it came with an en-suite.

The window, however, was fixed with metal bars and there were several giant eyeballs in the corners of the wall. Those eyes continued to move, as if they were alive. Lu Yan immediately reacted and felt that these were probably akin to surveillance cameras.

But none of that mattered.

In the room, the light-yellow wallpaper was smeared with bright red blood.

There were several bloody handprints in the centre as well as a line written crookedly in blood: Save me.

The smell of blood in the room was strong enough to overwhelm the smell of sulfur. Big Brother however seemed unaware of it.

“Stay in your room and reflect on your actions.” Big Brother locked the chain to the head of the bed, “I’m going to go meet a client. I’ll be back later.”

He reached out and gently rubbed Lu Yan’s head.

Lu Yan didn’t evade it.

Big Brother’s mood had obviously improved. A smile hung from his lips.

But when he reached the door, he suddenly turned around, as if he had remembered something. He casually commented, “Little sister is very strange today. Why haven’t you scolded me yet?”

Turns out he was also a masochist.
