Chapter 8 – Exposed?

Jian Mingzhou’s heart skipped a beat when he heard these words. He almost couldn’t maintain his expression—

Xie Jing heard it!

He pursed his lips and looked back with confusion, “What?”

Xie Jing explained patiently with his eyes slightly lowered, “Weren’t those two girls looking at us just now? And they were saying something like ‘younger top’ and ‘so meng’?

“…” Jian Mingzhou, “Were they?”

As they spoke, they passed by the traffic light next to the parking lot. It flickered a few times.

There was a faint glimmer in Xie Jing’s dark eyes and as well as a faint smile on his lips, “Uncle, do you know what it means?”

Jian Mingzhou swallowed nervously. He could feel his ears turning hot.

With a stony expression, he cried out internally: Even if he knew, he couldn’t tell him what it meant! Are you asking him to tell him that ‘younger top’ means that the top is younger than the bottom—

Moreover, why was he the bottom?!

Jian Mingzhou looked ahead and translated it literally, “Maybe they’re saying that you’re young and cute?”

“……” Xie Jing responded lightly, “I don’t think that’s the case.”

The two walked on in silence.

The dim sky cast a hazy and ambiguous veil over their surroundings.

Xie Jing didn’t say anything else and Jian Mingzhou didn’t know whether he believed his nonsense. Just as he was nervously waiting for the other party’s next question, he heard the other person sigh, “Hm…Forget it.”

Xie Jing indifferently changed the subject, “What were you saying about your company the day before yesterday?”

Jian Mingzhou looked at his side profile and blinked a few times. He then readily continued that topic, “Oh, the day before yesterday, the security guard outside the company got into a fight with a police dog…”

Xie Jing turned his head: ?

Although they had skipped over this topic, Jian Mingzhou was still worried about it.

After two days of worrying, he finally couldn’t help but ask Xia Ye, “I have a question—”

Jian Mingzhou, “……”

Jian Mingzhou clapped his hands together, “I find it hard to believe that someone with your capability could be kicked out of the Literature Department.”

Xia Ye immediately bristled up, “That topic is taboo!”

The two fought a few rounds with their pens.

Jian Mingzhou was about to call a stop to it when he suddenly heard Xia Ye ask, “So, who asked you that question?” His glasses reflected light, “The child living with you?”

With him hitting the target, Jian Mingzhou stopped moving.

The pen cap slipped off and ink splashed onto his shirt.

They both looked over, “…Ah.”

If a white T-shirt was stained with ink, it basically couldn’t be salvaged.

Qian Qian suddenly wanted to mess around with it. She also used to be a comic book author but because her skills were not up to par, she changed direction and became an editor instead.

Jian Mingzhou held out his shirt and let her do as she pleased with it.

Xia Ye watched from the side. After watching for a while, he turned his gaze to Jian Mingzhou who was standing on the side.

His lowered face was gentle and warm and he was very patient. He was the type that could unconsciously attract others but he himself was inexperienced with romance.

Recalling the two encounters with that child…

Xia Ye frowned a little and considerately reminded him, “Mingzhou.”

Jian Mingzhou looked up, “What?”

Xia Ye hesitated, “That child of yours…”

“What?!” Qian Qian looked up immediately, her pen trembling, “Deputy Editor, you have a child? When did you give birth?”

The rest of his words were cut off.

Jian Mingzhou responded calmly while holding out his shirt, “I have not given birth. Please respect my physiological structure.”

Qian Qian lowered her head shyly.

Xia Ye turned his head away: Forget it. What was he worrying about?

When he returned home at night, the shirt caught Xie Jing’s attention.

The latter was sitting on the sofa looking at his phone. When he heard the noise, he looked over for a few seconds and asked, “Comic?”

Jian Mingzhou, “Drawn by a colleague.”

“Oh…” Xie Jing looked at it, “So do you work as a comic editor?”

There was nothing wrong with acknowledging that.

Jian Mingzhou paused and then nodded, “Yeah.”

Xie Jing raised a brow in surprise. Jian Mingzhou added with a guilty conscience, “Boys’ comics.”

A comic about two boys. How could it not be considered boys’ comics?

Xie Jing just laughed, “Unfortunately I don’t often read comics.”

……

After learning that Xie Jing wasn’t dwelling on that matter, Jian Mingzhou stopped worrying about the issue of ‘younger top’ and ‘so meng’. The other party had probably just casually asked about it because he really didn’t know.

On Wednesday afternoon, Xie Jing went out for training.

Jian Mingzhou also packed up and got ready to head out.

Teacher Xue Ying’s book was hitting the shelves today so he planned to visit a nearby bookstore and take a look.

The corner bookstore was located on a pedestrian street not far from his place.

After pushing open the glass door with wind chimes hanging on it, a clean and brightly lit store came into view.

The shelves were arranged into categories, with literary books and BL comics sitting next to each other.

Jian Mingzhou stood at the literature bookshelf, pretending to look through them, while watching the customers buying BL books from a distance.

He was watching for a while when a familiar colour suddenly appeared in his line of sight: A tuft of golden hair was peeking out from the bookshelf in front of him, looking quite sneaky. It was quite eye-catching.

Jian Mingzhou: ……

Wait a minute, isn’t that He Yi?

Was he here to buy BL comics? But that sneaky look of his is too suspicious—

Even the shop assistants were on full alert.

Jian Mingzhou couldn’t bear to watch this. He went over and called out, “Xiao Yi.” He wanted to tell him that he didn’t have to act so secretively and to just be natural…

“Ahh!!!” He Yi was startled.

Everyone looked over.

“……” Jian Mingzhou stopped in place and gently closed his eyes.

After He Yi reflexively shouted, he also realised that he had made a mistake. He covered his mouth and looked over, “Brother Mingzhou?”

Jian Mingzhou patted him lightly, “Keep your voice down.”

“Oh.” He Yi was still holding a BL comic in his hand. He immediately explained with a red face, “Don’t misunderstand. I’m not buying this for myself. I’m buying it for my younger sister…”

He Yi looked at him cautiously, “Just now, for a moment, the look in your eyes seemed unfathomable…”

Jian Mingzhou’s expression remained gentle, “You saw wrong.”

“…Oh.”

With this interruption, and with the company of someone he knew, He Yi felt a lot more comfortable. He began to look for the comics he was requested to buy.

Jian Mingzhou took a look: It even included Teacher Xue Ying’s new book. Not bad.

He started some small talk, “Zhou Xuyang didn’t come with you today?”

“No. He said he wanted to train more. Oh, that reminds me!” He Yi suddenly took out his phone and excitedly sent a message, “I’m going to tell him that I ran into Brother Mingzhou haha~”

“You two get along very well.”

“Yeah. We’re best friends!”

Jian Mingzhou suppressed the corners of his lips from rising, “Oh.”

After He Yi sent out the message, he looked up and met Jian Mingzhou’s slightly stirring gaze. He paused for a moment—

Why did he feel like Brother Mingzhou was even happier than he was upon hearing that they got along well?

“Have you picked out the books?”

“Oh oh, not yet. Brother Mingzhou, please stay with me a little longer.”

At the gate of F University, Zhou Xuyang and Xie Jing were walking out of the campus together.

It was three in the afternoon. Their extra training had just ended.

Zhou Xuyang said that he was going to go find He Yi after the training so Xie Jing said goodbye, “Then I’ll head back first.”

“Yeah. He just sent me a message…Huh?!”

Zhou Xuyang suddenly called out to Xie Jing, “Wait, he said he’s with your uncle at the bookstore.”

Xie Jing stopped in place and turned around: ?

“…They’re at the corner bookstore. I’m going to go find him, do you want to come too?” Zhou Xuyang scrolled through his phone.

There was a pause that lasted two seconds, “Sure.”

The two of them headed over.

The afternoon sun shone down from above, casting distinct shadows underneath them.

Zhou Xuyang had his head lowered as he replied to the messages and he then suddenly realised something and looked at Xie Jing next to him. The latter’s face was expressionless as he looked ahead into the distance. His true mood was unreadable.

Recalling the matter of adding WeChat contacts last time and the trip to the bookstore this time…

Zhou Xuyang asked hesitantly, “Uh…Xie Jing, would you mind if your uncle got along better with other friends?” A scene suddenly appeared in his mind:

Gege~ Your uncle and He Yi are having a good time together, you wouldn’t be unhappy about it right~ (KKnotes: Gege means big brother. The line here makes a reference to typical green tea talk. Green tea is used to describe people who pretend to be innocent but actually have ulterior motives)

“Why would I mind?” The person beside him laughed.

Xie Jing still looked unbothered, “We’re not actually uncle and nephew anyway.”

Zhou Xuyang returned to his senses, “That’s true.”

……

In the corner bookstore, He Yi had finally finished picking out the books.

“I’ll go pay for it. Zhou Xuyang will be coming over soon.”

Jian Mingzhou looked over, “Then these books…”

He Yi announced happily, “I can get him to carry some for me.”

Jian Mingzhou: …You’re so bold!

He Yi bought about ten books in total. As he checked them one last time, two familiar covers suddenly flashed by.

Jian Mingzhou took a look. Wasn’t this published by his company?

“Wait a minute, you got the wrong one.”

He pointed at the two books with the same title, “This is not the first and second volume. It’s the collector’s edition and the new edition.”

He Yi turned it over and checked the back, “Wow, thank you! Brother Mingzhou, you sure know everyth—”

His words abruptly came to a stop and he looked up: ?

“……”

They both held their breaths.

As they wordlessly stared at each other, the silence was deafening.

The author has something to say:

Xie Jing: I’ll arrive in three seconds
