Arc 3: Humanoid Village
Chapter 64

Xu Ziyue held the doll in one hand, holding it close to him, while he used his other hand to press down and restrain its limb movements.

Yan Shi just happened to turn around at this moment. Seeing that Jin’er was still standing there, he explained, “Then we’ll go up and get ready. We will gather up later.” The main reason for this was to allow them to move out of Jin’er’s line of sight so that Jin’er wouldn’t figure out their intended route.

Jin’er silently watched them go up the stairs.

After taking a few steps, Yan Shi noticed that something wasn’t quite right. When he turned back around, he saw Xu Ziyue still standing there with the doll in his arms. He asked, “You’re not coming up?”

“I’ll wait for you to come down.” Xu Ziyue shook his head, “I don’t have anything I need to prepare.”

Yan Shi wondered whether Xu Ziyue really didn’t understand his intention or if he was just pretending not to understand.

But with Jin’er watching them, Yan Shi could only swallow those words back down.

Yan Shi said, “Then you can wait here.”

As Yan Shi and the others went upstairs, they couldn’t help but glance back at Xu Ziyue from an angle that couldn’t be seen by Xu Ziyue and Jin’er.

“He couldn’t be plotting something with that Jin’er, right?” Tang Yunyun asked suspiciously.

Upon hearing this, Lu Xiuyang couldn’t help but wonder if he was trying to work together with the “ghost” to ensure his own safety.

There had been such cases in previous games. There had been some players who would go against other players and help NPCs in exchange for their survival. The only problem was that the risk was high because there would always be NPCs that would go against their promise. Even so, when faced with a dire situation, there would still be players who were willing to take this risk.

Lu Xiuyang couldn’t help but suspect this.

Even if Xu Ziyue does not plan on betraying them, what if he had already become controlled by the doll? If that was the case, all their conversations and discussions would have been “overheard”.

As such, Lu Xiuyang who was planning to take back his doll clothes would likely be the first to meet his end.

If Xu Ziyue told Jin’er about this matter…..Lu Xiuyang would be finished.

The more he thought about it, the more Lu Xiuyang felt that his guesses made sense. He even ignored Yan Shi’s shouts from behind him.

He quickly rushed downstairs and approached Xu Ziyue with large and quick strides.

Xu Ziyue was let out a sigh of relief when he saw Yan Shi and the others disappear around the corner of the stairs and had loosened his hold around the doll.

Jin’er however withdrew her gaze from the stairs, nodded at Xu Ziyue and even politely did a bow before turning around and leaving.

“What the hell is over there?” Xu Ziyue watched Jin’er leave and lowered his head to ask the doll this question.

The doll didn’t speak and just continued to point in that direction……Since Xu Ziyue seems to have got the message he wanted to convey; he dropped his hand.

Xu Ziyue stayed downstairs because he wanted to see what the doll was trying to show him. Until now, the doll had not done anything harmful to him —— with the exception of making him catch a cold.

But that was just an accident.

However, just as Xu Ziyue turned around and got ready to walk down that corridor, rapid footsteps approached from behind.

Soon afterwards, Lu Xiuyang appeared looking tense and panicked.

Xu Ziyue: “???”

Yan Shi and the others who had chased after Lu Xiuyang saw Xu Ziyue and Lu Xiuyang standing there facing each other. Xu Ziyue’s looked confused and Jin’er was nowhere in sight.

“Where’s Jin’er?” Lu Xiuyang asked tensely. The tone he used to speak this time was very different to his usual tone.

“After seeing you off, she left…..” Xu Ziyue furrowed his brows and subconsciously took a step back to stand a little further away from him. Lu Xiuyang didn’t seem to be in the right mind.

Yan Shi was no stranger to this. He patted Lu Xiuyang’s shoulder and forcefully pulled him back a little. He quietly whispered to him, “Don’t overthink it. With Jin’er gone now, we can do things more conveniently. Don’t worry, it’s okay.”

Lu Xiuyang took a deep breath to calm himself down a little.

Hu Beijia stood closest to them and heard Yan Shi’s words. She turned and asked Xu Ziyue, “Which direction did Jin’er go?”

Xu Ziyue pointed at one of the two corridors. Unfortunately, it was the corridor leading to Jin’ers studio.

Guan Chengze said, “Then let’s check the other side first. We should hurry. After checking…….We’ll get someone to lure Jin’er away and we can check the other side.” After he finished saying that, he started walking over to the other corridor. When he saw that the others weren’t moving, he urged again, “Let’s go.”

Xu Ziyue held his doll tightly and followed behind Guan Chengze. It was the same corridor the doll was pointing at earlier.

Yan Shi walked beside Lu Xiuyang and couldn’t help but worry.

Lu Xiuyang’s current situation was a little dangerous.

If this continued, he was certain that he wouldn’t be able to live very long…….Lu Xiuyang right now is a very dangerous companion.

He can no longer share the same thoughts and ideas as the rest of them.

And often, when someone becomes desperate, they would want to drag the others down with them.

And this possibility is often the most dangerous.

When they walked past a locked room, the doll raised his hand again. Xu Ziyue quietly pressed that hand back down and mentally noted the room.

“Let’s go to the place where you found the body. Where is it?” Hu Beijia asked.

“It’s the room ahead.” This time the room with the corpse was tightly locked and the stench coming out from it wasn’t as unbearable as it was yesterday.

Tang Yunyun covered her nose and revealed a disgusted expression, “What is this smell. It’s nauseating.”

Xu Ziyue said, “Today is okay. It was worse yesterday.”

“There are two possibilities. The first is that it was taken away and the second is that the door is closed so we don’t smell much of it.” Yan Shi turned and looked at Lu Xiuyang who wasn’t cooperating, “Go check and see if the door can be opened?”

Lu Xiuyang looked a little unwilling.

“Hurry and check. After checking, we can go to the other side.” After Hu Beijia’s urging, Lu Xiuyang finally took out a small wire from his pocket.

After some fiddling, the door opened.

This time Xu Ziyue didn’t make any attempt to look inside but Yan Shi had pushed the door open completely.

There was no corpse in the room, but the disgusting smell still lingered.

“Looks like it was taken away.” Yan Shi walked in with his nose covered and then started to search through the room. Hu Beijia closely followed behind him and started looking around.

“I’ll be on the lookout outside!” Tang Yunyun stood at the door and clearly had no intention to go inside. Without lifting his head, Yan Shi made a sound of affirmation.

As they rummaged around for a while, Xu Ziyue’s throat felt a little itchy. He covered his mouth and sneezed a few times. Soon after that, he felt the doll in his arms touching his arm.

It looked like he wanted to pat Xu Ziyue’s back but because his arms were too short and his body was too small, he could only replace it with Xu Ziyue’s arm.

“There’s something under the bed.” Guan Chengze said and picked up a broom from the corner of the room. Using the broom, he swept out the object under the bed.

It was a very strange object. The overall shape of it was like the hollow neck of a broken porcelain jar but the surface of it looked very old with some of it coming off resembling chipping paint.

The overall colour was brownish-red but there were also some areas that were light red and the parts that were exposed under the outer layer were of a darker red.

Yan Shi picked it up and examined it for a while with a frown.

He loosened his hand, letting the object fall to the ground. It made a dull sound.

“It didn’t break. It also doesn’t sound like porcelain…..” It also felt a little strange and was even a little springy.
