Revenge – CH4

Chapter four

Zhou Wen was brought into the other side of the room by two soldiers carrying live ammunition. He laughed bitterly. If he wanted to resist, he would have resisted already let alone stand here.

From an early age, he and his younger brother could be said to be dependent on each other. His earliest memories of his parents were of them always arguing. His father loved to eat, drink, gamble and sleep around and his mother had to take up all the responsibilities in the household so, naturally, they quarrelled endlessly. Afterwards, his mother met another man and their relationship worsened even further. Zhou Wu’s birth came without any anticipation and when Zhou Wu was only eleven months old, his parents divorced. His father suspected that he wasn’t his own child and was reluctant to take care of him. Even his grandmother regarded him as a bringer of misfortune…….

From the beginning, Zhou Wu had always been very small and frail and had always followed him around because he was the only one who would treat him well……

That brother who always climbed into his bed at night to sleep, that brother who cried whenever he sees him getting beaten by his father and grandmother, that brother he had raised by feeding congee one mouthful at a time…….…..they were five years apart in age but Zhou Wen took care of his own brother as if he was his own son. He knew that if he didn’t take care of him, Zhou Wu would have probably starved to death. He still remembered that one time when he stayed at a provincial capital for two days to participate in a maths competition only to come home to Zhou Wu who was the brink of death. The Zhou Wu who was only six years old had fallen ill but no one at home cared for him let alone brought him anything to eat…….

It was also from this point in time that Zhou Wen would never leave his brother alone for too long. His grades dropped and after graduating from junior high school, he started working. It was only when his father died of cancer did Zhou Wen give his brother his savings and enlisted to join the army. With his father gone, his brother would no longer get beaten….As for his grandmother, she had many sons so even if Zhou Wen’s father had passed away, her other son’s would take care of her.

Zhou Wen knew that his brother had never lived a good life. Even after entering Division 9 and sending more money to him, he knew that most of the money would be used to pay back the debt his father had left behind. He remembered that despite Zhou Wu getting into a better university, for the scholarship and for the free tuition fees, he chose a lower tiered university….

After entering Division 9, he no longer had any vacations. On the rare occasion that he would go back, his brother would always cry while pulling at his sleeves. For him to cry like that at this age…..but at that time, even he himself felt his eyes stinging.

Zhou Wen clenched his fists tightly and dug his nails into his palms. He used the pain to calm himself down. Both his hands were covered in wounds —– while he was killing he was too overwhelmed by his emotions that he couldn’t help but use his own blood to write down those words. Of course, he didn’t regret it.

After joining Division 9, Zhou Wen had killed a lot of people but it was only thing that moment that he felt that he was at his craziest, calmest and most exhilarated state.

“That person is the murderer?” An Nan Tian looked at the man on the other end of the room in disbelief. He was indeed a well-built young man with a stoic expression. If he saw him on a normal basis, An Nan Tian believed that he would have probably had a good impression of him but now….This man with the dark aura of death around him was the murderer who killed his son!

“I’m the one who killed them.” Zhou Wen said.

“You bastard! Demon! Monster! I wish you die a horrible death…..” Liu Yuan rushed up and yelled while grabbing onto the iron bars. Zhou Wen only looked at her from a distance silently.

An Nan Tian didn’t speak. He felt that something was wrong as another parent spoke up.

“Why did you ask for us to come? What’s the point of seeing someone like him? He should just be killed on the spot!”

“The military court is about to go on trial. If nothing goes wrong then I will be given a death sentence.” Zhou Wen looked at the men and women facing him. He opened his mouth as the corners of his mouth curved. Before this, it could be considered as a smile but to the onlookers now, it looked like a devils grin.

“Deserve it! You deserve it!” Liu Yuan spoke ferociously. It was hard to imagine such a frail woman having so much energy. It had to be said that it was fuelled by her hatred.

“If I deserve it, their your sons also deserve it…..” Zhou Wen smiled. Without giving the other party a chance to talk: “Zhou Wu is my brother.”

An Nan Tian and the faces of several people present went pale.

“My younger brother has always been very well-behaved. He wrote letters to me every day and every week I would look forward to his letters. But that day, I didn’t receive a letter from him but his death notice.” Zhou Wen brought his hands that were handcuffed and clutched his chest. Just by recalling the memory of that day, the sorrow was enough to kill him – at that time, he felt his heart stop beating. It was then followed by doubt and then disbelief.

“My brother was killed by your sons!” Zhou Wen said coldly: “Your sons killed my brother, and it was even done intentionally so why, why can’t I kill them?”  The more he spoke, the more insane the expression on his face became. The two police officers behind him immediately took out a syringe but Zhou Wen discovered their intentions: “I don’t need tranquilizers right now. Really. I just wanted to meet them and say a few things. I won’t go crazy before I finishing saying my part!”

“Doing those things to those children, don’t you think that you’re too cruel?” An Nan Tian’s hand shook. He knew what his son was like. That night, his son had called him and when he arrived at the scene, he naturally knew what had happened. However, deep inside he still thought that what his son did was right. After all, dying was better than becoming disabled and it would avoid bringing him other problems too. Although he had some power, the power of media in this society was very strong and if he died, then nothing would happen….

An Nan Tian who had climbed up from the bottom naturally would not accept something like this so after cleaning things up, he harshly scolded his son. What he didn’t expect was that the university student of unknown origin actually had a brother like this…..

“I have killed many people and I have also hesitated before, but the little girl in Chechnya wouldn’t hesitate like me. At that time, because of that moment of hesitation, I almost lost my life. Since then, I’ve never hesitated anymore….Cruel? I was actually being very lenient to them! Before, when I heard them discussing my brother’s death, I had the urge to rip them to shreds.”

Zhou Wen closed his eyes. He still remembered that moment he climbed through the window and heard the truth. At that time, if he had a grenade on him he would have used it and killed himself along with those people present.

——–“I didn’t know that it would feel like that when you run over a person. That car, I won’t drive it anymore.”

——–“Even if you want to, you probably can’t. After something like this, do you think your dad will let you drive the car?”

——–“That’s true. Hitting that guy was so unlucky! Fortunately we made sure he died then and there otherwise how eye-catching would a broken legged university student be.…..Speaking of which, we’re actually pretty lucky that there weren’t any witnesses.”

—–“Lucky your ass! Laozi’s spending money was taken away because of this! An Ping, you should watch the road if you drive after drinking. Let’s see what you will do if this happens again!”

…….

The brother he had taken care of like a treasure; the brother he was reluctant to scold; in the end, died all alone on the street….

Zhou Wu. He had always been a good child. Since he was young, no matter how hard things may be, he would not complain. At that time, he didn’t have the ability to protect him and could only secretly help him apply medicine after a beating from their father while blaming himself for being so incompetent.

When his brother was in fourth grade of elementary school, a written composition he had written won and he received five yuan as a prize. He immediately bought a pair of gloves and, with his hands red from the cold, he gave it to Zhou Wen….

When he stopped attending school, his brother held onto him and cried for a very long time. Afterwards, while he went out and worked, his brother took up all the chores at home. At that time, he was only ten years old….

Zhou Wen suppressed the sorrow within him and opened his eyes which had become misty with tears: “This time I was the one who asked to see you all. You can think of it as me being cruel because I really didn’t want you all be well off.”

“I couldn’t find the evidence of your sons’ actions so I could only personally enact revenge…..Even if I lose my life, I am willing to do so. But the reason why they are able to do these things, isn’t it because of you?”

“Because they had the support of their parents, because they knew that their parents would clean up their mess, because they knew that even if they killed someone, nothing would happen to them; that’s why they’re able to act so immorally?”

“They are the future of the country, the country’s hope, but because they come from a good background, they can act lawlessly and not take responsibility?”

“This time it was my brother but who would it be next time?” Zhou Wen, in one go, said everything that he had kept inside him. Tears were already flowing down his face.

A man should not shed tears so easily, it was just that he was hurt to the point of no return.

He couldn’t repress the sorrow in his chest. The brother he had protected for twenty years had already died.

An Nan Tian and the others watched as Zhou Wen was taken away in daze. They didn’t know if they had made the right decision to come. Zhou Wen just wanted to see them to clarify the truth but the truth overwhelmed them.

Before this, An Nan Tian had to support his family so he didn’t break down. However after Zhou Wen left, he collapsed and began to cry with deep sorrow together with Liu Yuan.

Li Shao Yu came out from the corner of the room. He couldn’t help but feel his chest tighten. Zhou Wen was his senior and like him, he had also joined Division 9 halfway. In the past few years, he could be said to have admired the other person but now, Zhou Wen is about to go to court! Li Shao Yu took in a deep breath. He understood that the country had to give their citizens a response on the situation and so Zhou Wen would without a doubt be given a death sentence that will be implemented as soon as possible.

In the past few years, Li Shao Yu had witnessed Zhou Wen’s efforts. Because Division 9 could not be known by the public, it meant that even their family must not know what they were doing. For Zhou Wen, his wish was for his brother to feel proud of him so he worked very hard —— As long as he accumulated enough merits, his family could receive the protection of the country and he could spend New Year’s with his family……

Now, the source of his efforts was gone. It was no surprise that he had the intentions to die and follow after him….

Li Shao Yu brought the parents to the place where the judgement would take place. Zhou Wen was already standing there and soon after, the judges arrived. The evidence was conclusive and the death penalty was given effortlessly but none of the members present had a smile on their faces…..

“The defendant Zhou Wen deliberately committed murder, his method wicked and cruel. He is to be given a death sentence and be stripped of his rights of life….” The solemn voice of the judge rang through the empty hall. Those who heard these words felt that they also heard the sounds of something breaking. Zhou Wen raised his head and looked up at the metal ceiling. He seemingly saw his brother reaching his hands out towards him and he wanted to reach out to him as well but the weight of the handcuffs held his hands down.

Li Shao Yu quickly walked out the room and saw Gu Liang standing against the wall by the door. He was slightly stunned but quickly recovered: “No one can save him?”

“No….” Gu Liang said lowly as he took a drag from his cigarette.

“…..Death sentence….” Li Shao Yu’s voice was soft.

Gu Liang’s body trembled and the cigarette in his hand fell to the ground.
